§ 29-108. When exempt from chapter provisions.

  • The provisions of this chapter regulating the operation, parking and standing of vehicles shall apply to authorized emergency vehicles, except that a driver when operating any such vehicle in an emergency or in the immediate pursuit of an actual or suspected violator of the law, unless otherwise directed by a police officer, may:

    (a)

    Park or stand notwithstanding the provisions of this chapter;

    (b)

    Proceed past a red or stop signal or stop sign, but only after slowing down as may be necessary for safe operation;

    (c)

    Disregard regulations governing the direction of movement or turning in specified directions so long as he does not endanger life or property;

    (d)

    Exceed the prima facie speed limits established by this chapter so long as life or property is not endangered; provided, however, that this exception shall not apply to ambulances, which shall not be operated at a speed of more than ten (10) miles per hour over the posted speed limit.
